Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI)

With SPI, rules to allow or deny packets are set dynamically allowing connections to be validated based on their state. In essence, SPI only allows network traffic that belongs to an established, active connection. Inbound traffic is automatically discarded if it doesn't match a corresponding request from your network.

Additionally, packet inspection enables IP-traffic to be filtered based on the source/destination IP-address and type of service requested. For example, you can restrict inbound traffic to only allow HTTP connections to your web server, or deny certain local clients access to specific web-based services such as instant messaging or file-sharing services.
