Compilation problems (kernel-related)

The more recent 2.0.x kernels and the 2.1.x kernels require a small change in ipfwadm.c. You need to add the following line, just before the file linux/ip_fw.h is included:

  #include <linux/timer.h>

Compilation problems (glibc-related)

No version of ipfwadm will compile using glibc2 (libc6). The ipfwadm source RPM files included with Red Hat Linux 5.0 and 5.1 already contain a working patch.

Transparent proxying

Due to major restructuring part of the Linux kernel's socket code, transparent proxying does not function properly in kernel version 2.0.30 and in most of the 2.1.x kernels. This problem occurs when using packet redirection to a port that is different from the original destination port, although there might be other problems too. The problem was solved in the 2.0.x kernels since 2.0.31. Whether or not it does work in any of the 2.1.x kernels is unknown.
